Rock, Paper, Equation
Students start like they are playing rock, paper, scissors but students put up a random number of fingers instead. The students need to multiply both numbers and say the answer outloud. Can play a number of ways where if the answer is odd/even, the students need to do a set number of sit-ups, push-ups, squats or other forms of activity.
Imaginary Skip Count Rope
Students will stand with an imaginary jump rope. The teacher will say a number. The student will then count by 2s, 3s, etc. and do simulated jump roping.
Equation Stand up/Sit down
If the teacher gives the number 10, students stand up. Any other number, they sit down. The trick is, the teacher will say things like “738-621” and “3 x X=30” )This is a great game to try to “trick” the students by standing up or sitting down on when they should be doing the opposite. There are endless variations.
Group call
Teacher calls out a number or equation (9 x X=18), and the students have 10 seconds to get themselves into groups of that size. It might be impossible for everyone to get in a group every time, but each new number gives everyone another chance. In the basic game, just call out single numbers. Once students get the gist, you can call out addition or subtraction problems (i.e., “get into groups of 7-4.”)
Dance Maths
Each student gets a mat with numbers on it (or take turns). The teacher calls out the answer to the equation and students need to put their two feet on numbers that could multiply together to get that number. Along with some music and momentum, students can really get moving.
Round the Block
Students stand in a square. Give one of them a ball and a math challenge that requires a list of responses, such as counting by twos or naming shapes that have right angles. Before the student answers, he passes the ball to the person next to him. Children pass the ball around the square as quickly as they can, and the student must give the answer before the ball comes back to him.
