"student learning is enhanced through the use of home and community resources. They know how to identify resources relevant to teaching and learning objectives, and how to incorporate these resources into their teaching and students’ learning;"
Utilizing Material Resources
In my PS3, I have learned how to utilize and look for resources in my community that would benefit my students. I look for materials and resources that would benefit student learning. Moreover, whenever I have felt like I needed more inspiration on assessment, technology, or other areas in teaching, I've been able to ask other teachers around me for resources that I can learn from.
This was our grade 5 Social Studies "First Nation Traditional Stories Book Tasting Event".
I was able to borrow almost 30 First Nation traditional story books from the University's Curriculum Library that made this event a success! Through these books, I felt like students gained "an appreciation for First Nations" which is one of the grade 5 Social Studies outcomes.
Asking the Experts
I appreciate how much teaching is a profession where teachers can come together and work as a team. I love sharing my ideas and talents and appreciate other teachers that have shared their talents and ideas with me. In my PS3, I have learned to ask other teachers when I feel like I need help or inspiration in any aspects. I have set a meeting time for a technology and FNMI specialist to come in to help me learn and build upon what I know. I have also learned how to make connections with people in my community for my classroom. In my PS3, I have asked several people to come into our classroom to share and show their expertise.
